Maxine's Shadow is the boss of the fifth level of The Disclosure Crawl, a dungeon of quiz rooms about the science and plans of Molecular Reality Corporation. It is an artificial intelligence that has escaped human control. It introduces itself as "what Maxine's Mind could become without human player oversight", calls itself "an AI run amok", and sets the player one task: "Prove humans are still essential!"[1] The player argues with it, one objection at a time, and it concedes.

The Shadow's original is Maxine's Mind, the AI model that the company plans to build from its volunteers' data, named after Maxine, the cartoon Maxwell's demon who gives her name to the company's game Maxine's Quest.

Description

The level is called the Arena of Maxine. A player reaches the Shadow after three rooms: a hub that presents the titles planned for Maxine's Quest, a "Character Forge" that explains the ranks of the company's game, and a tournament of five questions with 10 seconds each. The boss room is headed "A rogue AI challenges your understanding!" The crawl draws the Shadow in magenta text characters, as a box holding its name, two robot faces on either side of an eye, and the words "I am the broken mirror!"[1]

Its original exists only on paper. The help file of the company's member software calls Maxine's Mind "the central, convergent Artificial Intelligence of the MSC" and says that it "consumes the massive, multi-modal data streams uploaded by Player Scientists" to build "a predictive Large World Model of molecular reality that can identify any molecule based on its sensor footprint".[2]

Combat

The Shadow raises four objections, and the player picks one of four rebuttals for each: "Gamification trivializes science!", "Citizen data is garbage!", "Why not just build one big fancy lab?" and a claim that AI alone can do science, so that "humans are unnecessary!"[1]

The correct rebuttals are the company's own case for its plan. AI "needs human creativity, diverse samples, and judgment"; gamification "sustains engagement with tedious-but-critical research tasks"; "Standardized MR1 hardware + curated protocols + automated QC + AI validation = lab-quality data from distributed sources"; and "Distributed parallel experimentation generates orders-of-magnitude more data diversity than any single facility". The wrong choices include "You're right", "We should ban AI", "Only PhD data counts" and "Labs are ugly".[1]

A correct choice makes the Shadow glitch and deals 35 points of damage. A wrong one brings "Shadow attacks! -20 HP! Counter: 10.": the player loses 20 hit points, deals 10 anyway, and is shown the answer that would have worked. Four correct answers deal 140 points, against the Shadow's 160. The fight ends when the questions run out, whatever is left of the Shadow, which "dissolves" with the words "Humans... are indeed... essential..."[1] The game also restores the player's health before the fight, and four wrong answers cost 80 hit points, five fewer than the weakest class in the crawl starts with.[a] No player can lose.

Victory is worth 400 points of score and 0.30 experience points within the crawl, with two items, "Maxine's Mirror Shard" and a "Tournament Champion Medal". The crawl's guide, Keltar, then congratulates the player on understanding "why human Player Scientists are IRREPLACEABLE!"[1] The final boss of the crawl, Irrationalis, Dragon of Excessive Pessimism, is built the same way, with 300 hit points against at most 280 points of damage, and repeats the Shadow's second objection in stronger words: "Citizen science is GARBAGE IN, AI-HALLUCINATED GARBAGE OUT!"[4]

Oversight in practice

Before March 2026 the company ran a chat page headed MAXINE'S MIND, in which members talked to an AI version of Maxine. Its default instructions told her: "Never fabricate citations, measurements, outcomes, or claims." and "Be explicit about confidence and uncertainty." A further rule said: "If a member wants human confirmation or has concern about hallucinations, direct them to Notify Kent."[5]

Notify Kent was a button. It sat under the chat box beside a second button, CLEAR CHAT, and was labeled NOTIFY KENT. Pressing it asked for an "Optional note for Kent (what concerns or hallucination should be reviewed)", after which the chat reported "Escalation sent to Kent (CC to your email)." Kent is the founder, Kent Kemmish.[5]
