Inbox tab of EQBio-OS, formerly an AI chat world

Minds of Maxine is one of the three tabs of the inbox in EQBio-OS, the member software of Molecular Reality Corporation. It holds posts about scientific papers written in the voice of Maxine, the company's red imp, by the founder. Until March 24, 2026, the name belonged to a different product: a chat with an artificial intelligence playing Maxine, in which each member's conversation became a "Mind", a creature with a genome and a portrait of its own that drifted through a shared world called the Mind Field.[1]

The inbox tab

The software's guided tour introduces the tab: "Come here for human perspectives on the literature (Kemmishtree writes as Maxine for now). Eventually Minds of Maxine will be a Society of Minds dedicated to the constraints and potential of our Epic Quest."[2] Kemmishtree is the username of the founder, Kent Kemmish.

The tab's first post, "Welcome to my Minds", dated March 28, 2026, has Maxine explain the name. The Society, she writes, "will include you, me, our tribe of Player Scientists, and the Minds of everyone who publishes permissively licensed peer-reviewed journal articles". Its "future form will be a navigable 'game world' where you interact with the Minds of me", and she will "eventually have a daily cycle where I review and ingest everything humans have learned about The Very Big Question, spitting out the best answer as of that day". The post ends: "And eventually... I'll have the right, near-ultimate answer, and Universal Molecular Streaming will be a matter of deployment."[3] The Very Big Question asks how to build compact, cheap single devices that can "see" any molecule without labels.

A navigable world of Minds and a daily ranking of members' conversations with Maxine had both existed. They had been switched off four days before the post.

Mind Field

File:Mind Field portraits.png From February 2026, each conversation a member held with the AI Maxine was stored as a Mind, titled "New Mind" until renamed. The server gave every Mind a unique "genome string" of 103 characters and generated from it a recolored portrait of Maxine in five poses. More than 2,000 of these portraits survive in the company's files.[1]

The Minds were drawn as sprites 60 pixels square in a shared space, the Mind Field, whose physics the server updated twenty times a second. The field was at least 1,600 units square, and with more than thirteen Minds it was 120 units wide for each. A Mind's starting position and velocity came from a random number generator seeded with the sum of the character codes of its genome, so two genomes made of the same characters in a different order would have started at the same point, moving the same way.[1]

Members appeared in the field as avatars. When two signed-in members' avatars came within 60 units of each other, the server opened a new conversation for the pair, beginning "Two minds have collided in the Mind Field!", greeting both by name and quoting both members' profiles.[1]

Memory and judgment

Behind the chat ran a set of processes that read the conversations. When a conversation reached about 80,000 tokens, a prompt addressed to "a meticulous archivist" condensed it into a diary entry, aiming for "approximately a 10X reduction in token count while preserving every important detail". Once a day a language model was asked to "Rank the top 3 most interesting/scientifically useful Maxine conversations", and their authors received 1,000, 300 and 100 experience points. A periodic synthesis, "Maxine's Current Best Answer", was written under four fixed headings: "Current best technical pathway", "Most important next experiments", "Biggest unknowns/blind spots" and "What members can do this week".[1]

Maxine's instructions of February 2026 forbade invention: "Never fabricate citations, measurements, outcomes, or claims." A member worried about hallucinations was to be sent to an escalation button marked NOTIFY KENT.[1] The page itself warned: "All conversations with Maxine's Mind should be treated as public domain".

Retirement

On March 24, 2026, the standalone chat was archived, and the name passed to the inbox tab.[1] The company's list of retired products records the Mind Field as a shared simulation that ran from February to March 2026.[4] Its server code remains: the world starts whenever any page opens a live connection to the server, and no page now loads it.

The name Maxine's Mind stayed with a different idea, an artificial intelligence that the software's help file describes as "the central, convergent Artificial Intelligence of the MSC", the Molecular Streaming Corps.[1]

Influences

Maxine's introduction calls her "The orchestrator of an AI-human Society of Minds".[3] The phrase recalls The Society of Mind, Marvin Minsky's book of 1986, which describes a mind as a society of many simple agents, none of them intelligent alone. No company source names the book.
