Characters in whose names the EQBio-OS inbox sends messages

The sender personas of EQBio-OS are the characters in whose names messages arrive in the inbox of EQBio-OS, the member software of Molecular Reality Corporation. Besides the company's two mascots, the felt puppet Keltar and the cartoon demon Maxine, they include two historical figures, Jeanne d'Arc and Thucydides, two puns on famous names, a name taken from a nonsense rhyme, and a job title, The Quartermaster. Every persona message on record, apart from Keltar's automatic reminders, was posted from the founder's own account.[1]

Mechanics

The inbox opened on March 28, 2026, with three tabs: EQBio-OS, the Molecular Streaming Corps and Minds of Maxine. A message can be sent in the name of any entry in the software's table of characters. Each entry has a name, a portrait, a color theme, a default tab and two switches that decide whether visitors and members may reply. Keltar and Maxine are not in the table; their names and portraits, his forward-facing photograph and her neutral pose, are written into the code.[1]

The settings do not always agree with one another. Jeanne d'Arc wears the color theme of Minds of Maxine but posts in the EQBio-OS tab, and Anna-Nirvana wears the theme of the Corps while her default tab is Minds of Maxine. Jeanne d'Arc is the only persona that accepts replies from visitors who have not signed up. Each message carries a colored label beside its subject, and the labels of the persona messages are "stakes", "Provisions", "instrumentation", "history" and "Viva".[1]

Jeanne d'Arc

The first persona in the table sent one message, on March 29, 2026. Its subject, "Ecrasez l'infame!", is Voltaire's motto, "crush the infamous thing", with which he ended letters from 1762 in his campaign against religious intolerance.[2] Jeanne d'Arc herself was burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431 after a church trial, and Voltaire later wrote a satirical poem about her, La Pucelle d'Orléans. The message's label is "stakes".

The body is short. It links to "234 answers by real humans to the question 'what excites you most about what we're building?'" and adds: "Every so often I look at this and remember we're not crazy and/or alone in wanting to see this project come to fruition."[3]

Thucydides

Thucydides, added on March 19, 2026, sent one message on March 29, under the label "history", in the Minds of Maxine tab. It is headed "They should have won a Nobel prize." and concerns Wallace and Joseph Coulter, whose Coulter counter became the basis of "the world's most common liquid diagnostic tests, the Complete Blood Count". The message continues: "Coulter Counters are pore-based devices, but in the era of commercialized nanopore sequencing, it's easy to forget that the only serious difference is size. The principle is the same." It ends with a question: "Which of us will be the first to get our own personal Complete Blood Count on an MR device?"[4] A history of the Coulter principle published in 2003 is attached.[5]

The Athenian historian described his History of the Peloponnesian War as "a possession for all time".[6] His portrait in the inbox is a marble bust with ball-and-stick molecules floating around the head. The company in the subject line, Beckman Coulter, was formed in 1997, when Beckman Instruments bought the Coulters' company.

Molecular de Unamuno

Molecular de Unamuno entered the table on April 2, 2026, four days after the date of his only message. Its subject is "¡Lucha por un mundo libre de oscuridad molecular!" ("Fight for a world free of molecular darkness!"), its label "Viva", and its body, which accompanies a video, reads in full: "Si entiendes español, mira el video. Si no entiendes español, ¿cómo estás leyendo esto?"[7][a] The instructions written for Keltar describe the Corps as "an army of light against molecular darkness".[1]

The name plays on Miguel de Unamuno (1864 to 1936), the Spanish writer and rector of the University of Salamanca. In his novel Niebla (1914) the hero, Augusto Pérez, goes to see the author, Unamuno himself, and learns from him that he is a fictional character.[8]

Other personas

The Quartermaster, added on March 16, 2026, runs the Corps' hardware office and addresses members as "Corpspeople".[9] Two personas have sent nothing. Anna-Nirvana, added on March 14, takes her name from a nonsense rhyme the founder wrote in 2024, and her portrait comes from the same cartoon-face service that draws faces for members without a photograph. Moleculart Fleming, added on March 16, has a black-and-white portrait of a television quiz host in a suit, standing beside a large sign that reads GAME.[1]

Maxine sent the fifteen threads with which the Minds of Maxine tab opened on March 28 and 29, 2026, among them "Welcome to my Minds", "rain of blood" and "Flossing with DNA". The software's guided tour says that "Kemmishtree writes as Maxine for now".[1] Keltar sends reminders of the company's video meetings, such as "Reminder: Saturday TELETHON" on April 25, 2026, and "Reminder: May Day All Hands Meeting" on May 2.[1]
