Summary
| Description | Schematic of the Coulter principle, drawn by code (hand-written SVG). Current flows between an electrode in the tube and one in the beaker through a single aperture, in a constant-voltage circuit with an ammeter; suction draws the suspension through. Three insulating spheres with diameters in the ratio 1 : 1.44 : 2 (volumes 1 : 3 : 8) cross in turn, and the trace below shows the dips they produce, with depths in the ratio 1 : 3 : 8 and widths equal to the crossing time. The aperture is drawn with the Model A's proportions (length 0.67 of the diameter). Not to scale; the dips are exaggerated. The figure of 1.2 parts in 10,000 comes from the article's formula with access resistance, for 90 µm³ in an aperture 100 µm wide and 67 µm long. |
