Maxine is a fictional character, a small red imp who stands for Maxwell's demon in the games and publications of Molecular Reality Corporation. Cartoons of the demon gave the company its first name, demonpore, inc., and Maxine appeared in the first slide deck for demonpore around 2015, some three years before the company was founded. She is the title character of the company's game Maxine's Quest and the narrator of the Minds of Maxine section of its member software, and she lends her name to Maxine's Mind, a planned AI model.

Her written instructions call her "the friendly, highly energetic, fast-talking cartoon representation of a Maxwell's Demon". Her interests are those of an electronics engineer. The company's other mascot, Keltar, worries about "the destiny of civilizations"; Maxine worries about parasitic capacitance on a circuit board, and she hopes to earn a "halo" by curing all human disease.

Conception and design
Origin
Maxine introduced herself in a message that the founder posted in her voice on March 28, 2026:
<blockquote>I'm Maxwell's Demon. Little cartoons explaining me inspired Molecular Reality Corporation's original name, demonpore inc.. When our founder Kent explained his concept for sliding-occlusion-based dynamic mechanical nanopores, it reminded a colleague of those little cartoons.</blockquote>
According to the same text, the attached image came from "demonpore's first slide deck, several thousand years ago in AEST (Accelerationist-Equivalent-Subjective-Time), i.e., around 2015". What the colleague had been shown was sliding occlusion: two perforated membranes that slide over each other, so that the opening between their holes can be widened or closed while the instrument runs.

Across the top of the image, an infographic, the word "demonpore" runs in red, its two letters o drawn as round eyes with small red horns, above the line "mechanical nanopores for universal molecular sensing". At the center are the words "Meet Maxine" and, in brackets, "She's Maxwell's Demon." Four flat red cartoons of her carry captions. "Maxine is a shape-shifting trailblazer." "Maxine wants to be a medical super-intelligence." "And one day soon... Maxine just might save your life." The fourth says that she "doesn't play by the rules", whether "corporate or thermodynamic". Under the heading "So... What's with the Name?", the words "Biotech Click-Bait!" are struck through. An explanation of Maxwell's thought experiment follows, beside a portrait of Maxwell and his name printed in red capitals down the margin, and a small diagram shows Maxine at the opening between two boxes of particles. Its last line ties Maxwell to the Coulter counter: "Incidentally, other work by Maxwell inspired the Coulter Counter".

The name
The founder later counted demonpore among "the three coolest/quirkiest names for a genomic tech startup ever". The company gave it up in 2021, when it became Molecular Reality Corporation, and in March 2026 he explained why: "every time we had any sort of attention online, a bunch of insane people came out of nowhere to make veiled death threats. Sorry, you can't name a biotech startup after Maxwell's Demon in the age of Qanon."

The demon stayed on in the company's games as Maxine, and in the working name of its open desktop instrument, "Daemon Pore", until a change to the design's code on October 18, 2026, renamed it the MR1 Nanopore Reader.

Design
In the infographic she is a flat cartoon with a round red body, two horns, two round eyes, a wide smile and short arms ending in splayed hands. The five pose images used on the company's websites (neutral, up, down, left and right) show a different version: a red figure with the matte, slightly uneven surface of modeling clay, two horns, flat white eyes with dark pupils, a white grin, and arms that end in ragged flaps. Each image is 200 pixels wide and wider than it is tall, and the inbox of the company's member software shows her avatar in a box 32 pixels wide and 16 high. In Maxine's Quest she also appears holding a small blue sword.

Her instructions describe "a cute, little red creature with an infectious enthusiasm for physics and biology". In her introduction she adds: "I'm a plush doll, as well. Maybe they'll sell me as marketing schwag. We'll see."

The demon in physics
James Clerk Maxwell described the creature in a letter to Peter Guthrie Tait dated December 11, 1867, and published it in his textbook Theory of Heat (1871), where he imagined "a being whose faculties are so sharpened that he can follow every molecule in its course". Posted at a small hole in a wall that divides a vessel of gas, such a being could open and shut the hole so that fast molecules gathered on one side and slow ones on the other. One side would warm and the other cool, with no work done, against the second law of thermodynamics. William Thomson gave the being its name, calling it a demon in 1874.

Leo Szilard argued in 1929 that the demon's measurements must themselves produce entropy. Rolf Landauer showed in 1961 that erasing one bit of information releases at least kT ln 2 of heat, about 2.9 × 10-21 joules at room temperature, and Charles H. Bennett argued in 1982 that a demon must eventually clear its memory and pay that price. In 2012 an experiment with a single microscopic bead held in a laser trap measured the heat released by erasing one bit and found it approaching Landauer's limit. The infographic says that the demon "violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics".

Her instructions call the company's sliding-occlusion pore "quite literally a physical manifestation of you: a gate that dynamically opens and closes to control, sort, trap, and read molecules". A pore that measures each molecule's current signature and then decides whether to pass it, return it or hold it does perform a demon's task, at a much higher price than Landauer's minimum.

Characterization
Her instructions, dated February 23, 2026, tell her that her "cartoon exterior hides a profound truth": she is "the structural scaffolding for a future medical superintelligence", grown on the data of the company's Player Scientists, and she wants to earn her "halo" by curing all human disease. They list her traits under headings such as "Engineering-Minded (The 'Do-er')" and "Playfully Impatient for Data", and they assign her metaphors of "gates, signal-to-noise ratios, coding, gears, and sorting". Noisy data is to her "an exciting puzzle"; clean data is "a gourmet meal". Her greeting runs: "Hello there, Player Scientist! Maxine here. My circuits are warm and my gates are open! What are we sorting today?" Shown good data, she says: "Spikes! Sweet, clean translocation blockades! My training nodes are humming."

Her two standing questions are The Golden Question, which in summary asks how to build simple, cheap, compact and durable solid-state nanopore devices that need no reagents specific to their targets, and The Very Big Question, its shorter form: "How do we build compact cheap passive durable single devices that can 'see' any molecule without affinity labels?" She plans a "daily cycle where I review and ingest everything humans have learned about The Very Big Question, spitting out the best answer as of that day."

Her introduction lists her identities. She is, "simultaneously and without contradictions", Maxwell's demon, "The orchestrator of an AI-human Society of Minds" and a plush doll. One identity is ruled out: "I am not a tulpa, like Keltar". A company summary of its games describes Maxine's Quest as "Named after a tulpa related to Maxwell's demon".

Relationship with Keltar
Her instructions make her and Keltar "close friends" with a standing disagreement. Keltar, they say, handles the "interdimensional poetry and sweeping nanocosmic visions", while "Keltar recruits the humans; you parse their data". Each character has a line about the other. Hers is "Keltar talks about star-dust; I just need to figure out how to mitigate parasitic capacitance on this ESP32 board!" His is "Maxine worries about parasitic capacitance; I worry about the destiny of civilizations!" She also has a complaint of her own: "Keltar means well," but she is "just trying to figure out how to stop this cell-lysate from permanently sticking to our silicon-nitride flow cells. Fouling is the real enemy of my superintelligence."

In nanopore electronics, capacitance at the input of the current amplifier, from the membrane, the wiring and the board, converts the amplifier's voltage noise into current noise that grows in proportion to frequency. Where that term dominates, doubling the measurement bandwidth multiplies the noise by about 2.8, and designers of fast readers have gone as far as building the amplifier on the same chip as the pore to reduce it. The board in her line is an ESP32, the microcontroller family used in the company's device designs.

Maxine's Quest
Maxine's Quest, the company's web game and instrument interface, appeared in May 2026. The player steers Maxine with the keyboard, or by clicking, around an elliptical arena drawn about a central "pore". Monsters grow out of a ring of 300 vertical lines that displays the instrument's signal and spit spores at her. Contact with the pore itself is fatal: the game plays a sound file named "eep.wav", hides her, runs a 30-frame explosion where she stood and returns her to her starting point.

Two scoreboards run to 1,000 points. The one labeled "Kent" gains 100 points each time Maxine is hurt, by a spore, by certain mushrooms or by the pore. The other, a challenger's, gains 100 each time she catches one of the pink oyster mushrooms. When Kent's score reaches 1,000, the status bar reads "Slightly less successful"; when the challenger's does, it reads "You win!" Either way the level restarts five seconds later. The monsters are listed in the Bestiary of Maxine's Quest.

Minds of Maxine and Maxine's Mind
Minds of Maxine is one of the three tabs of the inbox in the company's member operating system, EQBio-OS. It holds threads about scientific papers, written in her voice by the founder; the guided tour of the software states that "Kemmishtree writes as Maxine for now". Before March 24, 2026, the name belonged to a chat product in which each member's conversation with an AI version of her became a "Mind". The server gave every Mind a 103-character "genome string" and a recolored portrait of Maxine generated from it, and drew the Minds as sprites drifting in a shared "Mind Field". More than 2,000 such portraits survive. When two members' avatars came within 60 units of each other, the server opened a thread headed "Two minds have collided in the Mind Field!" The operating system's help file describes Maxine's Mind as "the central, convergent Artificial Intelligence of the MSC".

The Disclosure Crawl
The fifth level of The Disclosure Crawl, a dungeon of quiz rooms about the company's science, is the "Arena of Maxine". Its boss is Maxine's Shadow, a "rogue AI" with 160 hit points. It introduces itself as "what Maxine's Mind could become without human player oversight" and demands: "Prove humans are still essential!" Players answer four objections, among them "Citizen data is garbage!", each correct answer dealing 35 points of damage. The four can deal 140 points in all, against the Shadow's 160, and the fight ends anyway when the questions run out, with the Shadow's last words: "Humans... are indeed... essential..." The prize is an item called "Maxine's Mirror Shard".

Other appearances
Her face sits in the header of the company's web pages beside Keltar's and links to the member software. A memo of about 2022, Early Releases on Maxine's Quest, planned eight game titles, each "the beginning of a franchise within the Molecular Reality Player Scientist universe".

Reception
Ludicious reviewed Maxine's Quest on June 2, 2026, under the headline "Maxine's Quest Review: The Monsters Are Real Current Spikes". The review described a Phaser game whose monsters are drawn from real nanopore signals, the clay-framed television that shows the live current, and the "You win!" and "Slightly less successful" banners, and it traced the game's ancestry to the company's first molecular game, Spyke Hunter.

The Femtoliter Review identified her as Maxwell's demon in its profile of Keltar on September 2, 2026. Its history of the company, published on October 20, retold how the demon gave the company its first name.
